Treatment For Prostate Cancer
You followed all of the recommendations associated with preventing prostate cancer. You lived a healthy life, and got regular prostate exams. You may have even gotten a prostate cancer screening or two. Yet, it is the prostate cancer screening that caused you to get very negative news… you are indeed inflicted with prostate cancer. Such news can be devastating, especially if you think that you are already healthy. However, try not to fret since treatment for prostate cancer is a lot easier if the disease is caught earlier than if it is caught later.
So, what can a person expect when it comes to treatment for prostate cancer? This will depend on how their tumors are developing, along with a doctor’s individual opinion of what they think is best. Some men may not get any treatment for their prostate cancer. This form of treatment is known as watchful waiting. Basically, doctors keep a close medical eye on their patient’s condition, seeing if the prostate tumors grow any bigger. Many times they don’t… in fact, there are some men undergoing watchful waiting treatment that never have to get more serious treatments for prostate cancer. The tumors either go away on their own or are small enough that they don’t severely interfere with a person’s health. Either way, as long as things don’t get any worse, a man and his doctor could be watchfully waiting for the rest of his life.
Yet, not all prostate cancer sufferers are so lucky. Even if prostate cancer is caught in its earlier stages, more serious treatment may need to be considered if the tumors have started to spread to other areas of the body. More direct treatment for prostate cancer can include chemotherapy, radiation therapy or alternative therapies such as hormone therapy or therapies involving the freezing of the prostate. Some doctors may also consider surgery as a treatment for prostate cancer. Surgical treatments for prostate cancer can range from the tumors themselves being removed to the prostate being removed or even removal of the testicles.
Are there any complications associated with the treatments for prostate cancer? Unfortunately, yes, with the exception of watchful waiting, (since nothing is done). Chemotherapy can make a person extremely ill along with completely bald due to the power of the chemicals used in the therapy. Radiation therapy can render a man impotent and/or incontinent, two conditions that are as embarrassing as they are inconvenient. Freezing therapies could harm tissues that are healthy, while surgical treatments could spread the tumors along with severely diminishing a man’s sexual ability.
So, the treatments for prostate cancer, at least in their current states aren’t perfect. But they have been proven to do their jobs. By undergoing treatments for prostate cancer, a man can extend his life by a few decades, rather than succumbing to more grim diagnosis that he will barely be able to live a year. Granted, some of the complications involved with the treatments for prostate cancer might be more extreme but a man should remember that many of these difficulties are associated with old age anyway.
Prostate Cancer Treatment
The kind of treatment a prostate cancer sufferer will face will depend very much upon how the tumors inside your body are developing. Some men don’t get a treatment at all. Most men who have prostate cancer go through a number of stages, watchful waiting, chemotherapy and radiotherapy each of these can be long and painful.
